Signs of gum disease

Gum disease does not always cause pain straight away, so it can be easy to miss. These are some of the most common signs to look out for:

Bleeding when brushing or flossing
Red, swollen or tender gums
Bad breath that does not go away
Wobbly teeth or changes in how your bite feels
Receding gums or teeth that look longer

Healthy gums, healthy smile

What is gum disease?

There are two main stages:

  • Gingivitis – the early stage, where gums may look red, swollen or bleed when brushing

  • Periodontitis – the more advanced stage, where the bone around the teeth starts to break down

Gingivitis is reversible with good cleaning and hygiene care. Periodontitis needs more ongoing treatment, but with the right support, it can usually be kept under control.

Does it hurt?

Most treatments are very manageable and we will make sure you are comfortable throughout. For deeper cleaning, we can use local anaesthetic to numb the area if needed.

Why does it matter?

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy mouth. They hold your teeth in place and protect the bone underneath. Treating gum disease early can help prevent tooth loss, reduce inflammation, and improve overall health – including links to conditions like diabetes and heart disease.

Treatment depends on how advanced it is. We’ll examine your gums carefully, take measurements if needed, and put together a plan that works for you.

This might include:

Professional cleaning

We gently remove plaque and tartar to help reduce inflammation and keep your gums healthy.

Deep gum cleaning

For more advanced cases, we clean below the gumline to remove bacteria from hard-to-reach areas.

Home care advice

We will show you how to brush and clean more effectively – and recommend products that make a difference.

Ongoing support

Regular hygiene visits help monitor your gum health and keep everything stable over time.

The gum disease treatment procedure

You might be wondering...

What is the best treatment for gum disease?

That depends on how advanced it is. Early gum disease (gingivitis) can often be reversed with professional cleaning and good brushing at home. More advanced stages (periodontitis) may need deeper cleaning below the gumline, called root surface debridement, along with ongoing hygiene support.

In early stages, swollen or bleeding gums can fully recover with the right care. In more advanced cases, we can stop the disease from progressing, but lost gum or bone tissue may not grow back. We focus on keeping everything healthy and stable moving forward.

Gums may look red, puffy or shiny, and often bleed when brushing or flossing. There is usually no pain at this stage – which is why it can go unnoticed if you’re not looking out for the signs.

Start brushing twice a day for two full minutes, clean between your teeth daily, and see your dentist or hygienist for a professional clean. Most mild cases improve within a couple of weeks with good care.

Your gums will start to look less red and swollen, and they will stop bleeding when you brush or floss. Bad breath often improves too. With good brushing, flossing, and a professional clean, you should see signs of healing within a couple of weeks.
